Adhesion prophylaxis

The aim of this project is the development of methods for the prophylactic treatment of peritoneal injuries during laparoscopic and open pelvic surgery to prevent postoperative adhesions. Intraabdominal adhesions are a serious postoperative complication occurring in 50 to 90% of all open and laparoscopic abdominal surgeries. Postoperative adhesions often cause chronic pain syndromes as well as further far-reaching consequences for the affected patients such as bowel obstruction, infertility and problems during sexual intercourse. The individual, social and economic relevance is correspondingly high (only USA up to $ 1 billion per year). Regarding the still increasing number of surgical interventions, there is a high need for effective, user-friendly and economically compatible technologies for the prophylaxis of postoperative intrabdominal adhesions in future.
